Torres vs Vertonghen

Fernando Torres avoids further FA ban but fears long injury lay-off

Chelsea fear that Fernando Torres will suffer a prolonged injury lay-off after damaging his left knee in the Champions League victory against Steaua Bucharest.

The Spain international will undergo a scan on Wednesday with the hope that he is only out for a few weeks at most. Even so it could leave Chelsea's resources stretched with only two fit senior strikers in Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o.
It capped a day of mixed emotions for Torres, who escaped further punishment, and a possible four-match ban, after the Football Association’s revamped disciplinary rules came unstuck when it was deemed that he could not be charged despite having appeared to scratch Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen in the face.
“I was more than confident because I think the FA defends the interest and culture of English football, and defending English football is not to protect people who cheat and simulate,” Jose Mourinho said, again attacking Vertonghen, who he accused of feigning injury in the incident.
“The bad news is the injury, but the doctor is very confident it is not a big injury like we had with Marco van Ginkel [out for the season], but it’s something with his knee, his ligaments, and we have to wait for the scans tomorrow.”
Asked about Torres’s mental state, the Chelsea manager said: “If the injury is for 15 days I think he’ll be fine. The problem is if it’s more time.”
